Week 1 | Day 5 THE WEDDING AT CANA John 2:1-12
At a wedding in Cana, the joy of the celebration suddenly hits a wall—the wine runs out. Mary brings the problem to Jesus, and though He says, “My hour has not yet come,” He still chooses to act. He tells the servants to fill six large jars used for ceremonial washing with water, then to drew some out and take it to the master of the feast. Somewhere between the jar and the cup, the water becomes wine—the best wine of the night.
This first miracle is more than a party rescue. It’s a sign. Jesus takes water meant for external cleansing and turns it into overflowing, abundant wine—a picture of the inner transformation He came to bring through His death, burial, and resurrection. One day His blood would be poured out like wine to cleanse sinners and make them new. At Cana, He is quietly telegraphing the purpose of His mission: to turn our empty, dirty, broken lives into something beautiful by a miracle of grace. And He invites us, like the servants, to trust and obey His word even when it doesn’t seem to make sense.
APPLICATION
1. Bring Your Emptiness to Jesus
When the “wine” runs out in your life—joy, strength, hope—come to Him first, not last.
2. Offer Him your Jars
Give Him the ordinary, even “dirty” parts of your life, and trust He can transform what you can’t.
3. Obey Even When It’s Confusing
The servants had to ladle “water” to the master of the feast—that didn’t make sense, but they obeyed. Often God’s instructions run counter to our instincts, yet His ways serve a higher purpose.
4. See Beyond the Miracle
Don’t just want Jesus to fix your circumstances; let Him remake your heart. His greatest miracle is not changed situations but changed people.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Thank You for coming not just to fix moments, but to transform lives. Thank You that at Cana You showed me a glimpse of what Your cross and resurrection would accomplish—turning empty, sinful hearts into vessels of Your grace. Today I bring You my emptiness, my need, and the parts of my life that feel like “stone jars” and dirty water. I offer them to You. Help me to obey Your voice even when I don’t fully understand what You’re doing. Teach me to trust Your ways over my own and to live from the wine of Your grace, not the strength of my flesh. Make my life a quiet sign that points others to who You really are. In Your name I pray, Amen.
