Week 2 | Day 5 TEACHINGS FROM THE MOUNT Matthew 5:13-48 | Luke 6:24-36

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told His followers, “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” We’re not called to blend in, but to preserve what is good, expose what is evil, and point people toward God. Then He made a shocking statement: He did not come to abolish the Law and Prophets, but to fulfill them. The Law still stands as God’s holy standard, yet it can’t save us—it exposes our need for grace. Continuing on, Jesus goes deeper than behavior to the heart: anger is the root of murder, lust is the root of adultery, broken promises and revenge reveal hearts far from love. Over and over He says, “You have heard… but I say to you,” correcting generations of twisted interpretations. The standard is higher than anyone imagined—and we’re incapable of meeting it on our own. True righteousness, the kind that surpasses the “super-religious,” comes only through faith in Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Only His presence and power in us can produce a life that truly reflects the Kingdom.

APPLICATION

1. Live as Salt and Light

Does my life preserve God’s truth and help others see Him more where I live, work, and serve?”

2. Let God’s Law Search Your Heart

Don’t just avoid the obvious sins; invite the Spirit to expose anger, lust, deceit, and selfishness beneath the surface.

3. Rest in Grace, not Performance

Remember: you can’t surpass the righteousness of religious people by trying harder—only by trusting Christ and receiving His righteousness by faith.

4. Depend on the Holy Spirit Daily

Admit your inability to live this way in your own strength and consciously rely on the Spirit’s presence, guidance, and power.

PRAYER

Lord, Thank You for fulfilling the Law and showing me God’s true standard. I confess that on my own I fall far short—in my thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Thank You that through Your cross and resurrection I can be forgiven and made right with God by grace through faith. Holy Spirit, live Your life in me. Make me salt and light where You’ve placed me. Expose anything in my heart that doesn’t match Your Kingdom, and give me the strength to obey. Use my life to help others walk by faith and not by sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
